New Members
Congratulations on your new position at Stony Brook University. We're hoping that many of you will participate in our Chapter meetings, take part in committee work and enjoy our social events. It's a great chance to meet other faculty and professionals in and outside of your department.
UUP negotiates with New York Sate on behalf of all SUNY academic and professional faculty. UUP also provides benefits to all members of the bargaining unit (like Dental and Vision, Free Group Life Insurance, etc.) Your Stony Brook UUP Chapter is working on several labor management issues, including part-time faculty conerns. As you know, there is strength in numbers.
Membership rights and responsibilities: No one is compelled to become a member of UUP. However, the union is legally obligated to provide contractual protections including negotiated raises, benefits, and grievance representation. Non-members, in turn, are obligated to pay "agency fees." By signing a union membership card, you become a union member and enjoy the democratic right to vote on contracts and select your union officers and delegates. Check out your pay stub. If you have dues taken out under "membership" then you are a member. If you have dues taken out under "agency fee", then you are not a member yet. If you are interested in becoming a member, contact Pam Wolfskill, UUP Stony Brook Chapter Membership Development Officer or Click Here to access an Active Membership Application (in PDF format).
In an effort to better serve our members, the Department Representative Program was developed.
Department Representatives are available to aid UUP members with questions and problems and direct them to the appropriate union officer for additional assistance. They are available to provide information on SUNY policies, health benefits and more.
Department Representatives are a two-way communication between groups of members and the chapter elected officers, including the executive board. Department Representatives assist the chapter leadership with such things as announcements, programs, information about available services, political activity and support for negotiations activities.
The results of this program serve to strengthen UUP on our campus.
