To properly honor those who came before us—and to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten—we must continue to educate, remember, and pass down their stories. That history is incomplete without acknowledging resilience alongside loss, triumphs over adversity and erasure, and above all, the strength and unity of the Black community. These lessons offer all of us guidance and inspiration as we face today’s many challenges.
Black excellence is rooted in respect for the past, grounded in the present, and committed to building a future in which everyone has a place. The extraordinary contributions made to our society cannot be denied, and so we make space for pride, celebration, and reflection this month and throughout the year. This country was built by those taken from another land, those who migrated in search of a better life, and those who passed on their wisdom, courage, and love.
Across campus, you’ll find events honoring remarkable individuals who have shaped our world and enriched our Stony Brook community.
